There are some major changes to the calendar for all athletes, volunteers, organizations, staff, and press to note.
There will be no handcycle race at the CSC invitational this year. Due to circumstances beyond the control of U.S. Handcycling and our major partner, PVA, the budget for the event has soared beyond our grasp. Race promoters at the CSC did a great job with the handcycling event in 2007, but did not offer an acceptable budget for the handcycle race in 2008. This is very disappointing news for the handcycling season, as the CSC was slated to be the National Criterium Championship in 2008 (as it was in 2007). If you are as disappointed as we are about this...please email Arlington Sports and let them know!

As was announced last week, the Clocktower Classic in Rome, GA has stepped-up as a last-minute replacement to host the Criterium Championship. Rome has done a great job hosting handcycling as part of the Tour de Georgia the last three years, and it was an easy choice for the championship since event organizers have already recruited all of the top athletes in the nation to participate.
There will likely be a U.S. Handcycling Series National-level race to replace the CSC, likely in the Fall. Details will be posted on ushandcycling.org as soon as they become available. The official press release for the Rome Criterium Championship is below

For Immediate Release:
Clocktower Classic Handcycling Criterium Selected as 2008 U.S. Handcycling National Criterium Championship Venue
Rome, GA United States Handcycling Federation (USHF) officials announced Tuesday that the Georgia’s Rome Clocktower Classic Downtown Criterium has been selected as the 2008 US Handcycling National Criterium Championship venue. The Clocktower Classic handcycling races are sanctioned by the USHF and will feature a road race, downtown criterium, and time trial. US & International athletes will compete in these three races over three days. Several of the athletes will be competing for a place on the US Paralympic Cycling Team for the Summer Paralympic Games in Beijing.
“U.S. Handcycling has been very impressed with the growth of the handcycle race in Rome over the last three years, and it is clear that this year’s race will be better than ever,” commented Ian Lawless, USHF Executive Director. “The most important factor in our decision to award the Championship to Rome is the willingness of the organizing committee to embrace and implement a handcycle race, despite the absence of the Tour de Georgia. This sentiment is not lost on U.S. Handcycling staff, Board, and athletes, and it is clear that the organizing committee – and the City of Rome – places importance on cycling for people with and without disabilities. This is especially important in today’s world as there are many new athletes [cyclists] who have been injured serving their country in the military. The Clocktower Classic sets the bar by supporting all disabled athletes, including disabled veterans….especially when they need support the most.”
The Clocktower Classic Handcycling events are presented by the Greater Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau in conjunction with the USHF. Volunteers are still needed to serve as course marshals for all events. Those wishing to volunteer may contact Ann Hortman at 706/295-5576 or by visiting www.romegeorgia.org and clicking on the Rome Reps banner.
The Greater Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau would like to thank their sponsors and community partners for their support of the Clocktower Classic handcycling events.
