Herremans tackles Croc Trophy

Belgian triathlete, Marc Herremans, is having a go at the Crocodile Trophy...a multi-day mountain bike stage race in Australia.

Herremans was [is] a superstar triathlete until his spinal cord injury a few years back. He bounced back quickly...and is STILL...a superstar triathlete, currently the world champion in the handcycle category. He also does crazy things like climbing the infamous Mt. Ventoux three times in 24 hours.

The dude is obviously in SHAPE, so he throws some knobbies on his Schmicking and decides to enter an off-road race. Herremans is definitely determined, but struggled to make some of the climbs on stage one in his [road] handcycle.

Somebody call Mike Auspurger...this guy needs a One Off!

Holy Crap...1400 km. No doubt...everyday, the coverage on cyclingnews.com depicts a more amazing and determined guy...it's amazing he started the next stage each day. It reminds me of a guy name Jamal (can't remember his last name) who did the Alaska race in 2000. He's a quad and did the whole thing in a racing chair...12 hours every day.

I think Marc just set a new standard for athletic suffering. I can't imagine what he went through. It sure doesn't seem like the way I would want to experience the Outback. Nonetheless, this guy is now a handcycling legend.

Eight stages down and Marc is STILL going. I can't imagine what he must be going through. Hopefully, he doesn't do (more) permanent damage to his body. 12+ hour days in the dirt under the Australian sun. Insanity.

Of course, I'm biased, but, knobbies on a road bike? Why? We will contribute $500 towards his expenses if he comes to next year's off-road championships in Crested Butte.

Yowch! That guy is hardcore. He really needs to check out the off-road scene we've got going here in the U.S. Although it's still in its infancy, it won't be long before it takes off. Riding handcycles off-road adds quite a few more challenges and interesting elements: adventure, adrenaline, etc... Hopefully, we will get some good footage and photos from Marc's off-road excursions.
