Tour de Nez TT — Lost equipment and heat!
The opening stage of the Tour de Nez on Thursday was a bit hectic in Verdi, NV. Matt UPdike and Monica Bascio — travelling on the same flight from Denver — both suffered from lost equipment and had no handcycle at the start Thursday morning. Thanks to their good-willed competitors Todd Richardson and Cheri Blauwet, they were able to race on borrowed equipment. Both posted faster times than the competitors they borrowed equipment from, but the true good nature and sportsmanship of Blauwet and Richardson made them the winners of the day.
Meanwhile, Alejandro Albor and Oscar Sanchez showed great form, with Albor (the local hero) not surprisingly setting a scorching time. Newcomer John Kirsch of Reno (a former triathlete) posted a great time in his first race, and Patrick Cottini suffered in the dry heat of the Sierra Nevada, but posted a fast time. Other racers Harold Warner and John Mason posted great times on the difficult circuit.
In Thursday night’s Truckee criterium, the HUGE crowd went nuts for the handcycle race and marveled at the 6-person lead group for the majority of the race. With two to go, Albor got down to business and exploded the field, with the final finish order below……Stay tuned for Saturday’s big criterium finale!
