World Champion Alejandro Albor (Elk Grove, CA) is clinging to a 2:42 lead after two stages of the Wild West Tour in Perth Australia, and leads a group of four U.S. athletes at the event that also includes Oscar Sanchez (San Diego, CA), Harold Warner (Tuscon, AZ), and Matt Updike (Denver, CO).
“The terrain is very challenging, with quite a few hills, and the competition is stiff. We would liked to have been a little better prepared.” said Oscar Sanchez by phone on Sunday. Sanchez — in his first WW Tour and just his second international event — is currently sitting 4th overall in the C2 category almost 7 minutes back. Albor — racing for Team U.S. Handcycling along with Sanchez — won the opening time trial but was nipped at the line by Vicente Arzo of Spain in the Stage 2 road race.
Matt Updike (Team MasterCard) sits in a respectable 5th place in the HCB category 15 minutes behind leader Manfred Putz of Austria. Updike sits mid-pack, which is an excellent position this early in the season for the veteran, who doesn’t plan on peaking until the World Championships in Roubaix, France in late summer.
Harold Warner of Tuscon, AZ currently ranks 6th in the C1 category, which is an awesome result for the rookie at his first-ever major race.
